Arizona Pest Control by Season
Arizona's pest activity doesn't follow the same calendar as the rest of the country. Our desert climate, monsoon season, and mild winters create year-round pest pressure — but the threats shift dramatically by season. Here's what to watch for every month of the year.
Spring — March – May
Ant & Termite Swarm Season
Active Pests This Season
Termites (Arid-Land Subterranean)
Spring swarms signal mature colonies. Look for winged swarmers near windows and discarded wings on windowsills.
Ants (Fire, Carpenter, Argentine)
Colonies expand rapidly in spring. Fire ant mounds appear in yards and landscaping. Carpenter ants begin swarming.
Scorpions
Scorpions become active as temperatures rise above 70°F. Begin checking shoes, bedding, and dark spaces.
Cockroaches
American cockroaches emerge from overwintering sites and begin entering homes through drains and gaps.
What to Do This Season
- Schedule a spring termite inspection before swarm season peaks
- Seal cracks and gaps around doors, windows, and utility penetrations
- Eliminate standing water and moisture sources that attract ants
- Begin scorpion prevention treatments in April
Summer — June – August
Scorpion & Mosquito Peak Season
Active Pests This Season
Arizona Bark Scorpion
Peak activity. Scorpions are most active at night and enter homes through gaps as small as a credit card. Sting risk is highest June–August.
Desert Subterranean Termite
Monsoon rains (July–August) trigger the largest termite swarms of the year. Swarms often occur within 24–48 hours of the first significant rain.
Mosquitoes
Monsoon rains create standing water in yards, planters, and low spots. Mosquito populations explode within days of rain events.
Crickets
Monsoon season drives crickets indoors in large numbers. They enter through gaps under doors and around utility lines.
What to Do This Season
- Treat exterior perimeter for scorpions monthly during peak season
- Eliminate standing water within 48 hours of rain to prevent mosquito breeding
- Install door sweeps and seal gaps to prevent scorpion entry
- If you see a termite swarm, call immediately — the colony is active and nearby
Fall — September – November
Rodent & Spider Season
Active Pests This Season
Roof Rat
Fall is peak roof rat season in the Phoenix Metro. Rats enter through rooflines, vents, and gaps in eaves. Signs include droppings, gnaw marks, and scratching sounds at night.
Black Widow Spider
Spiders move indoors as temperatures drop. Black widows are commonly found in garages, storage areas, and undisturbed corners.
Western Drywood Termite
Fall swarms occur in late September through November. Swarmers are attracted to lights and often found near windows and doors.
Cockroaches
German and American cockroaches seek warm indoor environments as outdoor temperatures drop.
What to Do This Season
- Inspect roofline, vents, and eaves for rodent entry points before October
- Store firewood away from the home — it harbors scorpions, spiders, and rodents
- Check garage doors and door sweeps for gaps
- Schedule a fall rodent exclusion service before peak season
Winter — December – February
Year-Round Pressure Continues
Active Pests This Season
Roof Rat & House Mouse
Rodents are fully established indoors by winter. Active colonies breed year-round in warm attic and wall void environments.
Cockroaches
German cockroaches thrive indoors year-round. American cockroaches remain active in warm areas like kitchens, laundry rooms, and garages.
Termites
Subterranean termites remain active in Arizona's mild winters, especially in heated structures. No swarms, but colony feeding continues.
Scorpions
Bark scorpions do not hibernate — they slow down but remain active in warm microclimates. Winter is a good time to seal entry points.
What to Do This Season
- Winter is the best time for termite inspections — no swarm activity means clearer results
- Seal all rodent entry points identified in fall before spring breeding season
- Schedule a whole-home pest inspection to identify vulnerabilities
- Maintain perimeter treatments — Arizona winters don't stop pest activity
