Termites in Arizona: Species, Signs & What to Do
Arizona has some of the highest termite pressure in the country. Here's what every homeowner needs to know.
Signs of Termite Activity
Termites are rarely seen directly. These are the indicators our inspectors look for during a professional inspection.
Mud tubes on foundation walls, piers, or joists — the primary travel highway for subterranean termites
Hollow-sounding wood when tapped — termites consume wood from the inside out
Discarded wings near windowsills or doors after a swarm
Frass (termite droppings) — small pellets resembling sawdust, common with drywood termites
Bubbling or uneven paint that resembles water damage
Tight-fitting doors or windows caused by structural warping
Termite Species Found in Arizona
Arizona is home to multiple termite species with different behaviors and treatment requirements.
Desert Subterranean Termite
The most common species in Arizona. Lives underground and travels through mud tubes to reach wood above ground. Highly destructive and active year-round.

Arid-Land Subterranean Termite
Found throughout the desert Southwest. Similar behavior to desert subterranean termites but tolerates drier conditions.

Western Drywood Termite
Lives entirely within wood — no soil contact required. Infests furniture, framing, and structural wood. Identified by pellet-shaped frass.

Where Termites Hide in Arizona Homes
Termites exploit moisture and wood-to-soil contact. These are the most common entry and harborage points.
How to Reduce Termite Risk
Keep mulch, wood chips, and soil at least 6 inches from the foundation.
Fix leaks and improve drainage — termites are attracted to moisture.
Store firewood away from the home and elevated off the ground.
Seal cracks in the foundation and around utility penetrations.
Schedule annual termite inspections — early detection prevents costly damage.
When to Call a Professional
Termite damage is often hidden until it's extensive. If you notice any of the following, schedule an inspection immediately.
- You've found mud tubes anywhere on the foundation or interior
- Winged termites (swarmers) have appeared inside the home
- You're buying or selling a home — a WDO inspection is standard
- It's been more than 12 months since your last termite inspection
- You've noticed any of the warning signs above
