What Is Termite Pre-Treatment?

Termite pre-treatment — also called a soil pre-treatment or pre-construction termite treatment — is a chemical barrier applied to the soil beneath and around a new building's foundation before the concrete slab is poured. The treatment creates a continuous zone of protection that prevents subterranean termites from entering the structure through the soil.

In Arizona, subterranean termites are the most destructive pest threat to new construction. Desert Subterranean Termites and Arid-Land Subterranean Termites are active throughout Maricopa County and can begin attacking a new structure within months of completion. Pre-treatment is the most cost-effective defense — and it's required by law.

Arizona Code Requirement

Arizona Revised Statutes and the IRC as adopted in Arizona require termite pre-treatment for new residential construction. Most Maricopa County building departments require a treatment certificate before issuing a Certificate of Occupancy.

Treatment Types

We apply the right treatment method for your construction phase and building department requirements.

Soil Barrier Treatment (Pre-Pour)

Most Common

The standard pre-treatment method. Liquid termiticide is applied to the soil within the building envelope — including the fill soil, foundation walls, and the soil adjacent to the foundation — before the concrete slab is poured. This is the most effective and code-preferred method.

Slab Penetration Treatment

Post-Pour Option

Applied after the slab is poured by drilling through the concrete at regular intervals and injecting termiticide into the soil below. Used when pre-pour treatment was missed, disturbed, or when the building department requires supplemental treatment.

Perimeter Barrier Treatment

Supplemental

Liquid termiticide applied to the exterior perimeter of the foundation after framing is complete. Creates a continuous chemical barrier at the soil-foundation interface. Often used in combination with soil pre-treatment for maximum protection.

Bait Station Systems

Alternative Method

In-ground termite bait stations installed around the perimeter of the structure as an ongoing monitoring and treatment solution. Accepted by most building departments as an alternative to liquid pre-treatment in some jurisdictions.
